Labor Day 2023

Labor Day 2023

Hello Amy,

It’s the end of. summer…or is it? As I write this, the northeast is in the middle of a heat wave. Temperatures are climbing above 90 degrees. It’s warmer than it has been for most of the. summer. While I know that summer still has about 3 weeks left there’s something about the start of September that signals, at least for me, the end of summer. Perhaps it’s children returning to school or the start of leaves falling, or maybe. the proliferation of pumpkin-flavored everything that rushes fall. I’m not sure. And, while I love autumn. I’m not ready to say farewell to summer and sitting on my porch, picnicking, enjoying the brightness of summer’s blooms.

This week, the US and Canada, observed Labor Day, a time to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers. However, for those struggling with infertility or grieving the loss of a child, just the name of this holiday can be a painful reminder of unfulfilled dreams.

We also just observed National Grief Awareness Day on August 31.

While acknowledging grief is a step in the right direction; it isn’t enough. We need to do this every day.

Grief is a normal and natural emotion. We all will experience grief at some point, or multiple times, in our lives. Yet we live in a society that doesn’t accept it or encourage us to express it in healthy ways. We tell those grieving to be strong, don’t cry. We even say, don’t worry, you’ll get over it. Why? Because it makes us uncomfortable!

I hope we can learn to honor the importance of grief and all emotions. Even the tough ones. Pushing them down doesn’t get rid of them; they just go into hiding and show up later on, often in stronger ways.

Grief is not just death, although it is the most commonly associated event. It can be the result of a change in life circumstances (job, infertility, moving, separation, etc.), a change in a relationship (death, divorce, ending a relationship or friendship), it can even be from an event you initiated and wanted yet leaves you with a change in status or identity. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Often we aren’t even aware grief is what we are experiencing; we simply know we feel sad, out of sorts, or overwhelmed.

Be the person who makes it okay for a friend or family member to share with you. Be a heart with ears; saying nothing simply listen while they talk, cry, or laugh. Be compassionate and caring.

Take a listen to my latest podcast and let me know what you think. Do you have an idea for a guest or topic? Drop me a note.

If you’re struggling with any of these issues, know that you’re not alone. Remember that it’s okay to take time for self-care and prioritize your emotional well-being. Seek support from loved ones, join a support group, or consider working with a professional, like me, who specializes in grief. You can schedule a time to chat with me here.

Until the next time, I love and appreciate you,

Amy 🩷🩵

Boundaries and JFDI

Hi Amy,

Oh my gosh! It’s August already!

For many of us, August heralds the beginning of the end –– the end of long sunlit days, the heat of the summer, night after night of BBQs, and lots of family and friends’ get-togethers.

It also means the return to school for teachers and students alike.

It reminds me to:

Stay focused on the present moment.

Focus on the joy I get from watching the birds and animals in my backyard.

Appreciate each and every bite of farm fresh produce, the delicious sweet corn and tomatoes, the zucchini, and cucumbers. It is a time to feast on fresh tomatoes with basil from my garden, fresh mozzarella, and balsamic vinegar.

Savor and extend the season in every way for as long as possible.

If this is your first newsletter from me, welcome! Through my involvement in the ELEVATE Virtual Conference and Giveaway, many people joined my the mailing list and received my free gift. (You can get it here too!)

The ELEVATE Virtual Conference is happening this week and my session is on Thursday, August 3. You can still sign up for all of the sessions and it is free! Use this link to register and get access to 21 topics including mine!

Until the next time, I love and appreciate you,

You’ll be learning from 21 visionary leaders, healers, and bestselling authors, as well as some of today’s up-and-coming movers and shakers.

My latest podcast was released today. It is a conversation I had with Sensei Victoria Whitfield about what My latest podcast was released today calls strategic meditation others call it shamanic journeying (no drugs or alcohol involved with her) and communication with those who are more than alive (those who are living in the next realm).

Sensei is a Japanese word that means ‘teacher’ and that is her role as your guide: to teach you how to feel again, and how to truly love yourself while you’re at work or at home.

Victoria believes that Entrepreneurs need help getting and staying grounded, so they can serve more people and essentially, as she says, “save the freakin world.”

She also believes that Entrepreneurs are naturally sensitized to what they’re here to help others with. And that this natural sensitivity is popularly misunderstood as being “weak, weird, quirky, obsessive or pie-in-the-sky.” And when Entrepreneurs internalize this dysfunctional mindset, their sensitivities become their kryptonite: crippling stressors that overwhelm them, their teams, their communities, their families, and even their bank accounts.

She knows this because she lived this and observed it happen firsthand and she has helped me with this in my former career as an innkeeper and wedding officiant and now as a coach.

This conversation is definitely different from many/most of my chats. Please watch the episode and let me know your thoughts on the subject.

Until the next time, I love and appreciate you,

Amy ❤️🩵

PS: It’s time to say YES to elevating your life.

JULY 4TH

JULY 4TH

Hello Amy,

Happy 4th of July!

A day to celebrate the freedoms that we get to enjoy in this country.
Two figures hugging

Freedom means accepting differences and embracing diversity. It means being free to love whom we wish and being free of hate. It means having the freedom to express our values and creativity and being free to work where and when we want to work.

We are free to live where we want to live and to practice any religion we choose. We have the freedom of speech to express our opinions and ideas without fear of persecution. We have freedom of the press, to assemble, freedom from fear, from want, to pursue education, to vote, and others.

Many of these we take for granted.

I believe we can’t celebrate freedom unless all of us are free. And that includes being free from the emotions and grief that are holding us from living a joyful life.

Freedom is the topic of today’s podcast. I hope you’ll watch or listen and let me know how it “lands” for you.

As always I would love to hear about you and what life quakes you’re facing now or have in the past. Reply to this email and let me know.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and inclusive 4th of July!

Until the next time, I love and appreciate you,

Amy

Mid-June

Mid-June

Hello Amy,,

Wow! We are more than halfway through June. I’m beginning to believe what I heard for years, time moves faster as we age. Why is that? Is it because we see the time ahead of us as shorter than that which we have already lived? I’m curious. What I do know is that whatever time I have left, hopefully still lots of it, I want to revel in the moment and make more experiences to savor.

Since it still is June and June is Pride month, this week’s podcast is an interview with my friend, Susan Rose. Susan went through a major “life quake” a few years ago when her then-husband informed her that he felt he was a woman inside a man’s body. We talked about the emotional roller coaster she went on for the next few years. How Susan felt like a widow, but there was no “real’ death or a body; no funeral or rituals in which to find support.

Susan’s story is not completely unique. Just within my circle of family and friends, I am aware of parents whose children have undergone gender transition, also referred to as gender affirmation, and other spouses. Each person’s experience is unique and yet there are commonalities. My hope is to provide you with some questions to ask that can help on your journey to find support and answers. Often family members are not offered coaching or counseling to assist them to deal with their own emotions and loss. I really enjoyed my talk with Susan and hope you will too.
